The Maritime Industry consist a vast network of organizations and people serving on different departments, professions, and expertise. The majority of the persons in the key positions of the maritime society consist of persons who once work onboard the ship. They were masters of their own craft. The knowledge that they acquire for the past years will serve as the foundation of future mariners. But the big question is, will they share that knowledge to others.

A lot of country considers Mindanao as a home for terrorist groups like the “Abu Sayyaf”. But not all people living in Mindanao are considered as Muslim terrorist. Being a victim of the circumstances, many of them needs help and assistance. The “USNS Mercy“, a US Navy ship on a humanitarian medical mission helps a lot of countries that they visit. They included the Philippines as one of the countries that they could help with there medical mission.

A sophisticated equipment known as the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) can determine the past actions or movements of the ship in the event of an accident. It serves as the ship’s “Black Box” if you would compare it to an airplane. How would a Voyage Data Recorder help us in terms of safety? Many accidents that involve two or more ships often resulted to human error. With the invention and implementation of the voyage data recorder, solving ship related accident cases will consume less time and better result.

Inert Gas System is a gas or mixture of gases, such as flue gas, that contain insufficient oxygen to support the combustion of hydrocarbons. Inert gas prevents formation of flammable atmosphere in cargo tanks during cargo operation in tankers.

Why choose RSS Feeds? If you ask me, its simple to answer. Everybody is doing it. Its not that complicated to understand rss feeds. According to Wikipedia; RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts in a standardized format. It contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays. Are you getting confuse now?

I will enumerate for you the “Statutory Publications” commonly found on board the ship. The “Ship’s Library” must contain the following books and it must be known to all crew. But the problem is that, some Deck Officers or Crew doesn’t even know that it exists. The following list is for your future reference. “Leadership is the ability to influence the crew through human relations and communications to make them do what you want them to do and still like it” – Capt. G. This is the most striking word that our guest speaker in our recent “in house training” said. It is also the most forgotten word onboard the ship. Pinoy Maritime will once again remind our Captains and Officers about Leadership. It may sound the same but it sure is implemented differently.

Today is Mother’s Day. Did you give your mother a gift? You can simply invite her over for dinner or lunch to celebrate Mother’s Day. A simple greet will do, for her to feel that she is remembered by her family. Its only once a year, that’s why it’s worthwhile to remember her at Mother’s Day. Ship simulators have always been a craze in the Philippines. Most “Maritime Training Centers” in Manila offers a lot of simulator based courses to seamen’s. Among the most popular courses are SSBT, ECDIS and others. They also have simulators for Engine officers, wherein the setup is most likely the same as for the Deck officers.
