Do you know what is an email list and how is it important to you?
You often hear it mentioned on blogs but maybe you didn’t bother to know more about it.
An email list is a very important list that you can use not just in marketing, but in your network as well.
An email list is not just an ordinary email, these are emails of people that trust you and gives you importance, that is why they entrusted their personal email to you.
If you have a business, or you are a marketing officer, or you recruit or hire people, then building your email list is the single most important task that you should be doing now.
Stay connected with your Tribe
If you are working in a manning or recruitment agency, having an email list can lessen your time finding people.
Whenever a person gives you his email personally, it means you have permission to send her messages. It is called “permission marketing“. The messages you send is up to you or the intention that you want your email to achieve.
Whether you agree with me or not, we are all marketers, and the mere fact that you are trying to convince a person to use a product, join your group, and give a donation, you are already marketing.
The messages can be of:
- A common interest (ie. Hobby, Business, etc.)
- Regarding business proposals or marketing stuff
- Job hiring
- Information campaign… and so on….
If the person you email doesn’t know you, they wont bother to read your message. But if he know that you got his email because he gave it to you, it means he is expecting your message. Also, they are willing to listen to you because they value and trust you.
When they subscribe to your email list, they are showing their intention that they are willing to receive valuable information from you, and please do not share their email to others. Always respect their privacy, unless you ask their permission and they agreed.
Remember that TRUST is the key factor in your email list. If you loss that trust, you loss the game.
Pros and Cons – What to do about it?
There are numerous ways to create increase your email list. It can either be free or paid service. There are pros and cons as well, but the important thing is that choose the service that will make your job easier and accomplish a lot of task faster.
Let us start with the FREE service.
You can start your email list by simply using your own email. You can either…
- Indicate a note at the back of your business card, saying: “If you want to be part of my mailing list send a message to firstname.lastname@example.org, and I’ll keep it confidential”.
- Add an automatic subject line in the contact form of your blog and invite them to send you an email for interested people who want to join your mailing list.
- You can speak directly to a person you meet to send you an email and you will send him the details that he wants to know and also if he agrees you will send him weekly updates or promotions to his email.
The downside of this is that
- You cannot automate your message to all your contacts.
- You have no way to monitor if the emails are opened or not.
- You have no way of knowing if your email was shared with other people
- You have no way of knowing if the link you provided is clicked
- You have no way of knowing if your email is in the Junk mail or Spam mail of the recipient.
- You can get banned by your email provider if you send massive emails all at once and your messages will be considered a spam.
Another way of having a FREE email service online is through the following services:
- Mail Chimp
- Benchmark Email
- Constant Contact
- And many more…
This performed a little better than the manual method I mentioned above but the downside is that since it is free, there are limitations on the features that they will let you use.
Also, if you reached a certain amount of subscribers they will force you to sign-up to a paid account in order to keep your list.
I forgot to mention, you cannot download the emails of the people who signed up through this email services if it is free. Although some service allow you, most of them will not.
You can be creative in a lot of ways to grow your list.
You can do it offline or online. Do whatever is easier for you, as long as you achieve your objectives, and that is to build your email list.
I personally suggest that you start your own blog in order to have a better chance of growing your mailing list.
The misconception about blog is that people think that blogging are for those who knows how to write an article.
Just for additional info, blog came from the word “Web Log”, it used to be a log that you can access anywhere you are in the world as long as you have internet connection. Then as time passed, it change from Web Log to Blog which it is commonly known today.
You can use blog to create your CV, an “about me page”, a landing page for your business, a portfolio page, or whatever you can imagine.
It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to write articles daily, but it is helpful if you share information as well.
As I have mentioned, start your blog and invite people to join your mailing list.

It is a guaranteed proof
I often hear people that they don’t like to be marketed and you may often hear them say “Is that a marketing pitch?”. But whether you agree with me or not, we are all marketers. Period!
Let me give you an example:
If your friend has a skin allergy and he wants to put an ointment to relieved the itchiness, and you noticed it, what would you do?
Probably you would advice him to buy a certain product or medicine that you have used and proved to have good and fast result.
A lot of you will say, oh it is only an advice. But it is already marketing.
The minute that you endorse a certain product, activity, person, material, or whatever you may call it, that action is already marketing.
Now tell me if you haven’t done any marketing campaign to any person this past week? I assure you, you have marketed something, it is just not obvious to you.
But the point is they follow your advice because they trust you. The two things that you cannot create is Trust and Desire. You buy things because of desire and you choose a product that you trust.
The people in your mailing list are your network. Keep in mind that you need to expand your network.
Information does not land on your lap instantly, it is passed on by people within your network.
Let us look at our facebook and twitter friends. Those are a big number of network isn’t it? Maybe your nodding your head right now 🙂
Just like facebook and twitter, having an email list can help you a lot in:
- Your business
- Product creation
- Knowing the needs of your market through surveys
- Finding people to hire or people to invite
- Or share
And sending those information out there rapidly through email, can save you time if you have your list.
So now, we can say that the people in your network trust you. Maintain that trust and provide them information that they ask for.
It means that if they give you their email, you have permission to send them messages. These are messages related to what they are looking for or what you think they need to know.
But don’t abuse your Tribe (people in your network) otherwise they’ll filter your messages and never read it again.
With the email list you have, you can do a lot of productive things that you can imagine.
- You can announce a new job vacancy directly in their inbox
- You can market new product through email
- You can inform them of events that is coming up
- You can conduct surveys through your email, you can start by completing this form. I would really appreciate it.
- You can generate feedback on a certain aspect of your service through email
- And a lot more…
Just remember; don’t be a spammer.
People hate it if you are spamming emails that which they are not interested to read. These are emails that are the same content and sent twice a week.
Try to be creative when sending email, talk to your audience, let them feel that there is a person behind the email. Good character builds trust, and having trust can give you plenty benefits.
You must start an email campaign now in order to grow your list as early as possible.
The sooner you start the better.
It is the best decision that you’ll ever make.

- Check all the business cards you have collected
- List down the names and email address of people in your business card collection
- Put them in a spreadsheet and upload them to your email service provider.
With all the information you have, you could easily create your own email list and grow it in time.
I have done the free way of building list using free services but the mistake I did is that I wasn’t able to save the emails and have to do it manually and cost me a lot of time to complete.
You know the quote “You get what you paid for”, it applies to cheap and free products or service. Free is good but make sure you know what you are using and what’s your purpose in using it. That is why I shifted to paid service.
There are reasons why paid products are a little expensive. Bottom line is, the benefits it will give you is worth the pay.
What I am using now that really solve a lot of my problem is AWEBER. It is a very powerful tool and has a very good customer service that is ready to help you 24/7.
Its resource page is also very helpful, specially for those people that are starting out with their mailing list.
But it is only FREE on the first 30 days, after that you will have to pay the monthly amount.
What I really like about it is the automation and the feedback it gives me to know how I can provide better email to my subscribers.
It saves me a lot of time. Remember that in every work you do, especially in the internet, automation is very important.
Quick Tip: Only use paid email service if you think that you need it. But if you want to automate your messages and use all the functionality that a paid service provides, the best solution that I use is aweber. But before you buy, try first its FREE Trial, and if you are not satisfied with their service you can always unsubscribe.
You must learn to start that first step in making your list. Remember that most of the successful people that you know today started from small steps. The key is consistency.
