that's the sad thing for seafarers nowadays. have you heard the saying "Patience is a virtue"? let me share to you the story of someone i know. he was also like many seafarers several years ago. he applied for apprenticehip on interisland bec he doesn't have someone to back him up..yet it took him one year to be accepted as apprentice with the P500 monthly allowance. after a year, he took the exam for 3/M. then 2/M, then C/M and then master at the age of 27. with the d1 license and experience, he applied abroad. who would not want a master license applying for a 3/m position? bec he wants to take things slow. he is humble and he believes that a seafarer can be efficient if he has gone through the hard time and experienced what it's like to be there on local and international waters. he has a good heart and he shares his knowledge to his subordinates. he said that God made him as an instrument to be of help to others. certificate of excellence, recommendations he received. even principals asks for his opinions as to retain this crew or not or if this captain is good or not. receiveds calls and visits from his former crew when he's on vacation. he stayed to the agency that pays lower compared to others, so he can help some of his friends, relatives and kababayans to go onboard. God fearing, loves his family so much. He is well loved by those who knew him. looking back, he knew he made the right choice. now, he's way ahead of them...yet always humble..always thankful everyday and sharing his blessings.

the things you mentioned as to how to protect youself from fatigue while onboard is easier said than done. a chief officer is loaded with paperworks, in-charge of the whole loading and unloading operations...thus, having a continous sleep is almost impossible...esp if it would only take days from one port to another..the preparations are plenty. EXERCISE? i don't think so!!! they rather sleep. vitamins, food supplement and a good, happy talk from your family back home can somehow lessen your fatigue...PRAYERS- to keep you always on the right track.
