How to prevent Fatigue Onboard the Ship
Fatigue has a great effect on us. Human error caused by fatigue can cause a risk to life, property, and to the environment. It affects every seafarer. Do you know what causes fatigue on board the ship?
- Different weather of all extremes.
- Long hours of duty.
- Noise and Vibration.
- Tension between crew members.
- Lack of sleep, and poor quality of rest.
- Different time zones that affects our biological clock.
- Stress and excessive workload.
- Pressure on existing regulations, paperworks, emails, and telexes.
- Inspections, whether internal or external inspection (such as PSC, Vetting, etc.) causes stress, fear, and other worries which disrupts the seafarers physically and mentally.
These are just some of it, but there’s a lot more to add to it. What I’m trying to say is that we must learn how to manage Fatigue. You must learn to protect yourself against fatigue.
- Have a regular exercise.
- You must have a continuous sleep.
- Eat light snack before bedtime, to avoid waking up early and hungry.
- Job rotation is also good to break some monotonous kind of work.
- A little humor to lighten up a day’s work. Read “A Happy Ship”.
We are all in the same ship. We must help and understand the needs of each individual to prevent fatigue.
