Leadership is the ability to influence the crew through human relations and communications to make them do what you want them to do and still like it” – Capt. G. This is the most striking word that our guest speaker in our recent “in house training” said. It is also the most forgotten word onboard the ship. Pinoy Maritime will once again remind our Captains and Officers about Leadership. It may sound the same but it sure is implemented differently.

For the past year onboard the ship I have seen and work with different people of different country, and sad to say this is what lacks most Officers. A leader must always check the moral of his crew. He must learn to separate his personal problems with his job onboard. He must be approachable at all times and never leave anyone unnoticed. He must promote good camaraderie onboard the ship. He must be a good communicator. What are the characteristics of a good communicator?

  • Good listener.
  • Sensitive.
  • Talk and smile.
  • Joke a little.
  • Funny.
  • Motivated.
  • Flexible.
  • Positive.
  • Open minded.
  • Knowledgeable.
  • Energetic.

These are the most important characteristics as an Officer onboard the ship should have. Do you have this qualities that I’ve mentioned. You better start thinking and start having them, for you to have “A Happy Ship
