How to Motivate Yourself to Stay at a Job and Overcome the Urge to Leave.

Are you tired at work? You want to quit your job right? But something is holding you back. It’s normal, your human and you have doubts.

What can you do to stop yourself from quitting?


1. Start with small goals that will lead to achieving big goals.

You’ve set goals but you are tired of achieving it because nothing is changing. Maybe you’ve set a super big goal that takes a lot of time to achieve. Start with small steps, prime your feeling of pride in achieving small goals. This prepares you on a much bigger goal that you are about to face.

Don’t give up. Stay focused and remember that you will reap the benefits later as long as you stay focused in your goal.

2. Try something new.

Work is boring to you now. It is no longer challenging. You want to feel the challenge. Try something new, you can think of many ways to do something new.

Take a masteral degree while you’re working. Upgrade your credentials by taking short courses that are related or even not related to your work.

Take difficult assignments that are time pressured. It gives you that adrenalin rush whenever you work on deadlines. Just remember, once you’ve taken that challenge, make sure you’ll complete it. It is part of your baby step in priming your emotions in achieving small jobs that leads to big milestone in your job.

3. Look for a critique.

It is not a usual practice but it is one way of knowing which area of your job you need to improve. Look for a person in your workplace that you admire his or her work, and ask them to critique your performance with your job. Be open minded on whatever they will say.

Don’t hold a grudge on them if they told you the truth. This helps in improving yourself in connection to your work and your relationship to your peers. It also adds something new in your job that you consider boring.

4. Every time you achieve a milestone in your career, test it in order to improve it more.

It is not about being perfectionist, but rather about having a reality check on what areas you need to change or modify. As you stay longer in your job, it becomes monotonous. You start to develop skills that are near to perfection. But have you ask yourself if it is already an obsolete skill or technique.

Validate your suspicion by trying new methods in completing jobs that maybe easier and less time consuming. There’s nothing wrong in trying new stuffs that you know could improve your performance in your job and make your life easier to manage.

After all, it is always fun to try new things and find out the outcome by yourself, and then brag it to your colleague after you have good results.

5. Include an element of fun in your job.

This should always be in your list of daily activities in your workplace. It doesn’t necessarily mean party, but rather small talks or laughs that sort of an ice breaker in your daily routine at work.

Short breaks and visiting your colleagues can reduce the aching back pains that you are feeling whenever you are doing continues work. Off course you know your priorities; it is a must that you complete your job for the day. But it is also nice if you can couple it with fun to make your daily boring life more lively and enjoyable.

6. Be sociable.

Somehow you need to reward yourself, don’t forget that you have a social life after your work. Attend party (that is according to what is acceptable to your wife, if you know what I mean), but keep in mind your limitations.

Whenever there are events or big gatherings in your profession, find a way to squeeze it in your schedule. It makes you meet different people and discuss common ideas that can help you improve your job or make it more interesting.

Just make sure that you get their contact details afterward. It can help broaden your network as well.

7. Always be patient.

Patience is a virtue, and you can apply it in different ways in your life. Whether you are eager get promoted, wanted a new house, buy a new car, or travel around the world, being patient keeps you out of trouble.

It can even save you from making a wrong decision or jumping into drastic conclusion.

Whenever you have that urge of quitting your job, look back into this list and figure out a decision if you really want to quit. Identify what triggers your decision to quit and discuss it with the people you trust.

Ask their opinion especially those that will be affected once you quit your job (they’re your family that is directly dependent on your salary). Sometimes it takes only positive attitudes to put you back up on your feet and continue your job.

Every day at work is probably the worst day of your life. A boring, tiring, and stressful life that constantly draining your energy the whole day.

Think of yourself as a sponge, full of water, carrying the water at a certain point, and then left alone drained and dry after a day’s work. Then suddenly you tell yourself. You’ll quit your job. The question is, are you really ready to quit your job.

You’ve heard success stories of people that became successful after quitting; but the question again is; do you have the same conviction and perseverance as they have and willing to risk it all?

If not, I suggest you keep your job. Why? Here’s the reason why.


What makes you hate your job?

Normally it is about your boss. You heard me right. Your boss is often the trigger to your problem and your frustration. It doesn’t matter if he or she the CEO, the Manager, the Captain, or the Officer on the ship, but still they are the trigger to your problems and frustrations. The deciding factor whether you like your job or not are your bosses.

Another trigger to your daily frustration is the salary. A lot can be attributed to this reason

  • You think that you are underpaid.
  • Your talent is not recognized (they pay you less than your expertise)
  • You feel cheated because they are using you and not paying you rightfully.

In the first place you signed the contract so it means you agreed to the terms that it contains including the amount of your salary. But still you like to complain. It is the easiest way to release your frustration.

One other factor is your working environment. You like the job because you like the people you are working with. Whenever there are new people who arrived and changed the previous group of people you’ve worked with, you feel like you don’t want to work with the new ones. You don’t even want to try. You missed your previous group right?

What makes you like your job?

The big reason why other people love their job, is that they’ve been with the company for so long (10 or more years). It is like the 2nd house for them. This makes you think twice whether you like to leave or not. Even if the pay is low, it is often the time and effort you invested that wants you to keep your job.

Admit it or not, you are just content with the money you are earning right now. You are happy with the lifestyle that you have and you consider this as your comfort zone. You can choose to have more but you’ve rather not. It is about being contented of what you have, and this my friend doesn’t actually makes you like your job, you just like the feeling that your job is rewarding you.

Another reason that people are not jumping from one job to another, is because they are not in debt. Debt is the biggest problem you need to solve first. If you have debt you will become a slave to the one that you owe money to.

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender. (Proverbs 22:7)

Debt can make your life miserable. On the other hand, people who don’t have debt have a bit more happiness to stretch. They feel freer and enjoy the benefits that life gives them. They may not have too much money, but what they have makes them happy. After all, money is not always the source of happiness in this world.

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. (Proverbs 23:4-5).

Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. (Proverbs 11:28)

Instead of tiring yourself to be rich, better plan on how to make your life happier and simpler. It will amaze you to find joy in simple things in life. As you grow old, the once busy and bountiful life you have will start to become simpler every day. Then you’ll realize that what you are reading right now makes sense in your life.

How can you keep your job?

Before you even think of leaving your job, you better think that almost everybody everyday are thinking the same thing too. Now who among those people would leave and who will stay is the shifting of balance in the industry you belong. Here’s an example: If 10 companies of a certain industry, has 10 unhappy employees, which decides to quit their job at the same time and just transfer to another.

Then the employee will apply to another company which the previous employee left. They will just rotate in one big cycle of transfer and hiring. It is a never ending quit and job application which applies as a job cycle in the same industry, with the same set of companies. Then after a few years you will see your previous employee applying for a job in the company that they leave before.

The point is, before you even tire yourself in the process, ask yourself if it is really necessary for you to quit. What are the 2 or 3 main reasons why you should quit? If you list it down, you will identify the reasons then ask yourself, is there a chance that I will encounter the same frustration in the company that I will apply to. Remember that there is no perfect company; there is always something to complain about a company.

How is the economy?

Another factor to consider is the economy, it is never better right? It is always the same and inflation keeps getting higher and higher. Why not use this to your advantage and start writing goals, and plan your finances for the next five years. Plans create Goals, which you can follow and reminds you of what you need to do from now until the next few years so will not get into debt and stay happy with your job.

There is always a time for everything and if you think that it is not the right time to quit your job, and then keep it. Maybe it’s time to be a minimalist, live in a tiny house, or even live a frugal life, but still you have a goal to follow so that you will succeed in the end.

Finally, if you really want to quit your job, you must line up a list of optional job or replacement income before deciding to leave your source of income. It is unwise to just leave a job and no plan of what to do next. Even worse, not even have an emergency fund to support your unemployment days. So make a financial check and write your plan right now.

Now to you.

Finding the reason to quit is easier than finding the reason to stay. In fact it is easier to quit a job than to find one.

Before even deciding to quit your job ask yourself the reasons why you should quit, list it down and read it over. Now write down the reasons what you like about your current job and compare it with the reasons why you hate it.

Now decide if you want to stay or leave. If you decide to stay, keep yourself motivated and plan your next step for the next 5 years. Create goals and make sure to achieve those goals.

Why Do You Need To Start Investing To Yourself Today

You always think of success but you forget the most important requirements, you must invest in yourself.

It can mean enhancing your talent or spending time learning new things related to your work. When you do this, you accomplished another leap in your career and personality.

But how do you invest in yourself? It takes a lot of time learning and teaching new stuff, but there’s no other way but to ask, read, and apply new things that you’re learning each day. Anything that excites you makes learning fun.

Off course time is also involve. The more you spend time learning new stuff, the more you loose on other matters. But think of the good effect in the long term. It will give you a better chance of achieving a major leap in your career and the reward can be more than you expected.


1. Do you really need to learn new things?

Certainly! Every day is a learning day for you. Learn new things and explore new ideas. Ask yourself every time, what you can benefit from learning the skills that you see fit for you.

Or, you can master your current skills. Improve the parts that you think needs improving. This makes you more confident and helps you achieve a lot in life.

2. Can I just ask someone if I want to learn more, rather than doing it on my own?

It is better that you ask someone or look for a mentor. It lessens your time researching what you want to know and it gives you ideas that you don’t read on books or elsewhere.

You learn a lot from the experience of others, and this information is validated information, because it is tested and they already know what they’ll tell you to do and not to do.

3. How about books, does it still matter if I read it?

Read books as often as you can. Great people write books. And the advices you can read are timeless.

Now back it up with the actual input from your mentor then you have a recipe for success. The web is a good source of information. Spend at least an hour a day reading as much information every day, and most importantly apply what you have read.

4. What can I do to inspire myself if the time comes that I got bored?

Imagine yourself living a different life than what you have now. Imagine a better life, the one you dreamed about. It is achievable if you are willing to sweat it out and strive to achieve your goals.

If you want to inspire yourself every day cut out pictures of whatever your goal is. It can be a car, a new house, a vacation trip, etc. This help you visualize your goal and inspire you to push forward to achieve it.

5. But what if times really come that I feel depressed in achieving my goals?

Never think a single thought of negative vibes in your head. Only think of positive results, it makes your life better and your outlook in life more productive.

Positive thoughts radiates in your action and the way you communicate with others. The same with negativity, it is better to be positive in every aspect of your life than being negative.

6. In case I already achieve my goal, will I stop from investing on myself?

No. You never stop even if you are at the top. It must be an ongoing process.

You can always start learning different stuffs not related to your career. For example, if you are curious of being a painter, learn to be one. If you have an old film camera in your box, why not learn film photography.

Make your life interesting by learning plenty every day. Add spice to your life and enjoy it with your family.

The most important part of it all, don’t forget to put your feet on the ground. As you invest in yourself, you acquire knowledge at a fast pace, but don’t let the curse of knowledge creep in your mind and think that you are superior to others.

Learn to share what you know and share to the poor what you can give to them. This gives you purpose in your career and in your life.

Remember to invest in yourself always, because it is not only you who will benefit from it, also the people that surrounds you. Time is precious so spend it wisely.

How To Effectively Save For Your Retirement

When it comes to retirement seafarers always think the other way around. They always say what they want to do (as a retirement job) after retiring from the work at sea. But if you look at the dictionary the meaning of retirement is the opposite.”Retirement is the act of ending your working professional career – Merriam-Webster”, so now which is true about retirement.

When is the right time for retirement? Does age really is the measuring point when to retire?

Retirement should be done with careful planning and consideration. Remember that if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. The worst of all is that if you have no clue what you should plan about for your retirement.


1. Set a clear goal.

What are your plans when you retire? What do you dream to do during your retirement? These are the starting point for your planning. Write down what you want to do when you retire and quantify it. Know how much you need to sustain those needs, 15 to 20 years more if you are to retire at an old age.

2. Make a good accounting of your current finances.

Look at your expenses; compare it with your income. Can your goal be achieved based on your current financial lifestyle and earnings?

If no, you have to consider removing the unnecessary expenses or increase your salary. That way, you will be able to work your way through your end goal.

It is not the money that you have in your savings, that is hindering you to retire early, most of the time it is the money that you spent that is hindering you.

You see, if you write it in a spreadsheet, you’ll be surprised that you have spent more than what you have earned. You just didn’t notice it because it is either hidden through credit cards, loans, and other means of debts.

3. Consider reducing your lifestyle.

Make a lifestyle check (it also includes your spending habit), can you sustain your current lifestyle when you retire? If you stop living the lifestyle that you have now, will you be still happy when you retire with a much simpler life.

If your answer is no, then you have a serious problem. You will have to pay a bigger tax for your house, tax for your car, hobbies that you cannot get rid of, and restaurants you need to visit twice a week.

It is better to start living simpler now so you’ll get used to it earlier rather than get rid of it when you already retire.

4. Start estate planning immediately.

People raise their eyebrows when they hear about estate planning, but it is the most essential action in your life that you need to address immediately. Everything that you have acquired from now until the future is subject to tax.

Your family will not be able to own them immediately if they cannot pay the appropriate tax. Literally, the government owns you. Even the lot that they will bury you, must be bought and tax must be paid (it also includes the coffin). It is inevitable and if you don’t realize it early, your family will have problem in the end.

5. You must know where to invest.

I suggest you find a financial planner that you can talk to, when it comes to making decisions in investing and planning. But the basic idea is, diversify your investment.

Invest in liquid assets (mutual funds, bonds, money market, etc.), and in solid assets (apartments, real estate, business, etc.). This lessens the risk of your money being in one basket. But remember, estate planning is always related to investing.

So whenever you invest on these financial services, make sure you keep it in line with your estate plan.

6. Spend money wisely.

Your current spending habit affects your saving habit.

  • If you spend more than you earn,
  • if you spend more than you save,
  • and if you spend everything you have without considering your emergency expenses, the chance of bankruptcy is upon you.

If you realize it earlier and change, then you have a chance of saving for retirement. But if you realize it at your late 50’s, sad to say you have a serious problem during your retirement.

Just to remind you, a person who retires at old age has plenty of health related problems that needs medical attention and maintenance, which requires money to maintain a good health.

7. Determine what age you want to retire.

If you can force yourself to save more rather than spend more, I think the best way is to motivate yourself to retire at a young age. This forces you to think that you are time constrained and you need to save a lot now so that you will benefit later.

Eventually it is about you, being a good steward of your finances.

If you understand that your work will kill you slowly, you’ll probably decide to retire early to live longer.

If you know where to begin planning then you can accomplish a lot of your financial planning for your retirement.

You must have a clear age when you should retire. Time is your friend if you understand that preparing for retirement, you need to start planning now.

But, time can be your enemy if you realize late in your age that you need to save for your retirement.

Writing The Best Email Subject You Can Use To Get Hired

Here’s what you need to know about your email subjects: “It is poorly written.” The truth is that almost all the email subject title you send when you apply for a job does not get the reader’s attention. Other than that, it does not solve the immediate problem that a hiring manager needs to be solved.

It lacks urgency and it has words that are irrelevant to the position you are applying for. It lacks the magic it needs to be interesting. And the grammar you are using is horrible but somehow amusing.

What if you can find a way to improve your email subject and make you more interesting? Would you spend a minute to read further?


Make It Interesting and Tempting To Read

Have you read your daily newspaper? What catches your attention whenever you are reading it? Isn’t it the headline?

Yes, the headline catches your attention that’s why you are interested to read further. The same principles apply with your email subjects. Its purpose is to catch the reader’s attention to make him or her read further.

If your subject line is not doing its job to catch attention, there’s a big chance that your email will not be read or will be deleted from the reader’s inbox.

Make it catchy. Think of subject line that would wow the reader and create a desire to click it and read your message. But how can you achieve it?

Get directly to the point. If they are posting like this: “Wanted Deck Officer for Immediate Hiring – Salary Negotiable”; then you should align your email as a solution to the problem they wanted to solve.

So most probably, you’ll be writing your subject like this: “Applying For Deck Officer – Available Anytime”.

You must be the solution to their problem. Align your subject to the problem that they posted, as being the solution to that problem.

Now that you have started a good opening subject, make sure to be polite. Always end your email with polite words as: “Have a good day” or “Hope to hear from you soon”. This shows that you want to hear from them after they’ve read your email. You are inviting for a reply from them. You need this to know if they open your email and if you have a chance of getting hired.

Make Your Subject Line Irresistible

Put a personal touch in your subject line. If you know the name of the hiring manager, include it in your subject line. If you don’t know the name, then do an extra effort in finding out their name.

This makes your email more personal and attracts attention when they see that you mention their name and you are giving them the credit due to them.

When you write the 1st paragraph of your message, inform them immediately what’s inside your message. Their time is precious and by telling them what they will get out of reading your message, it saves time for them. If you attached your resume, tell them about it. Don’t expect everybody knows the symbol whenever there is an attachment file in your email.

Don’t ruin their time by providing those attachments that you have to compress or any additional effort just to see your resume.

Two formats usually works. A PDF file or a DOC file. Make sure that whatever extra action they will do to know you should not make them hesitant to do it. Not all hiring managers are techie; some of them are already old and not so computer savvy like you, so make it simple for them.

Avoid Making the Same Mistake As Others Do

Check your grammar. No matter how good you are or how skilled you are in your work, reading a poorly written message with so many grammatical errors makes it hard for the hiring manager to be impressed with you. Punctuations and spelling are the common mistakes that they usually commit.

Writing a single subject line like “Hi” is going to be ignored. Be polite and be interesting in writing your subject line. Use the right words and think of being the solution to the problem when you are writing your subject line.

When you write your subject line, be sure to think of professionalism. No matter how desperate you want to get hired, the bottom line is if you can show them that you are professional and polite in writing your messages, (particularly your email subject line) it makes a good impression on your part.

Think of it as a good way to start a conversation whenever you are writing, it should be a bridge to the next step in the hiring process which is the “Interview”. If you can make your subject line catchy, and minimize unnecessary words, then you’ll easily get the point over to them. Off course you should never forget to be polite, it should be obvious in your letter and in your personality.

Sprinkle your subject line with magic to make it interesting. Add personal touch and let them know what is inside your message.

Finally, check your grammar. Nobody likes to read a poorly written message or subject line.
